What are some reasons that we should all be concerned about privacy and how concerned are you about online privacy?
When people say they have nothing to hide it seems that they mean they are not doing anything illegal. Although this may be true, everyone has personal information on the internet that does need to be hidden. Almost everyone has a banking account of some sort, and their information is stored in files on the internet. Just because one individual isn’t doing anything illegal in their lives, other people are and they could potentially take banking information from people. Personal information goes far beyond banking information. People have their social security numbers online, home addresses, their locations, and although they have nothing illegal to hide, they have information out there that could hurt them in many ways if it falls into the hands of the wrong people.
I personally am most concerned with the privacy of my Facebook, and information about my location. I, like most people, have nothing to hide but my Facebook has already been hacked twice by people in South Carolina and by another person in the New England area. I got notifications saying that people logged into my account from unfamiliar places which was a bit shocking, but not that hard to believe. I would hate for people to post things that I would not want onto my Facebook page. Another thing I do not like to do is put information about my location at a certain time. I have heard stories about people posting on social media sites about their vacation and come back to a house that had been robbed. Even a simple post like a picture while on vacation can come back to hurt you, and that is upsetting.
I definitely agree with what you are saying about hiding your location. I sadly also know someone who went on vacation, posted photos, and came back to a house empty of their valuable items. It's scary to think that just by a simple post someone can pin point your exact location. I've never had someone hack my Facebook but I have heard about many incidents like yours. Because of those incidents I'm always changing my password and privacy settings to prevent an incident.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your concern for Facebook. My facebook has also been hacked from a different location within the United States. It scares me to think about someone got into my account. Also, a close friend of mine was robbed simply because she posted a photo of her whole family on vacation. Knowing this can happen should make anyone uneasy about their online privacy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have to say in your post. Like you and the others who commented, I have gotten notified that my Facebook account was logged into in an unfamiliar location. I didn't really think anything of it as I feel I don't have anything to hide. Although now with what we've been discussing in class about privacy I feel I should be concerned. I don't know what is considered to be "bad".
ReplyDeleteRyan, your point about letting people see your location is very true. I do not like people knowing where I am at every moment, and Facebook and many other social media sites can do just that.
ReplyDeleteRyan, I completely agree with your argument on Facebook and I share the same concerns as you do. In the past my Facebook has been hacked numerous times and those hackers have posted inappropriate things on my wall which I've delete which is annoying because it has happened so many times. I also agree that posting your location on Facebook is bad to do, my friend was on vacation before and posted his location and when he came home his house was broken into. Social media sites can harm an individual and in many cases aren't beneficial because they cause so many problems.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say there are people out their who are stealing our valuable information. We are forced use our credit card number to purchase items online. Thief's use that to there advantage to steal harmless peoples money over a computer screen
ReplyDeleteI agree I am not worried about my Facebook privacy very much but if someone can hack your Facebook it makes me wonder what other websites can they hack that i have used my credit card on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all you have to say in your post. I don't like people find out my personal information like my phone number of home address. After reading your post, I think I should always change my Facebook password.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan and everyone else's comments above. It is scary to think that people can hack my account and do whatever they please with it, and It's crazy to think it has actually happened to Ryan and some of those who have posted on here. It isn't the safest to have our location, age, birthday, gender, and all that specific information on our page. It makes it very easy for people to stalk us and hack us. We should learn to be more careful and private.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post. I think people need to be more careful with what they post and use some common sense. I also think that its scary that people can just hack into your accounts with no reprecussions.
